Deadliest Tornado Season in Decade

With 1,691 confirmed tornadoes and 125 confirmed deaths, 2008 was recorded as the most deadly tornado season in the United States since 1998 and the second most active season on record.  Tornado outbreaks began early in 2008 with its first set of over 70 storms on January 7. February saw the most deadly tornadoes since 1985 with 87 confirmed tornadoes including a level EF4 tornado.  Steady activity continued throughout the spring and into the peak of the 2008 tornado season. During a six week period in May and June, 600 tornadoes ravaged the U.S.

Between May 22 and May 31, 2008 the United States experienced 234 confirmed tornadoes with reported EF5 devastations.  On May 22, 2008 areas in Kansas was upgraded from a moderate risk to high risk area although damage was reported at an EF3 level. Parkersburg and New Hartford, Iowa were rated as EF5 damage and required millions of dollars in recovery.

  • 394 reported tornadoes
  •  294 confirmed tornadoes
  • Maximum damage rating EF4
